Int'l confce on Tipaimukh July 18

A day-long conference on transboundary rivers with special reference to Tipaimukh Dam planned by India will be held at the Jatiya Press Club on July 18.

The conference to be organised by New York-based International Farakka Committee (IFC) will start at 10:00 AM at the conference room of the Press Club.

Leading water experts, leaders of political parties and eminent journalists will interact at the conference which is expected to come up with a declaration.

Prof. Maniruzzaman Miah, former Vice Chancellor, Dhaka University and Conference Coordinator Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Editor, The New Nation will moderate the first and second sessions of the conference respectively.

Prof. Jasim Uddin Ahmad, former Vice Chancellor, Jahangirnagar University and President IFC, Bangladesh Chapter, Prof. Abdur Rob, Dhaka University, Farhad Mazhar, eminent columnist, development activist and environmentalist will address the first session as designated discussants, while Dr. S.I. Khan, former adviser on disaster management, United Nations, Ramananda Wanqkherakpam, Coordinator, CCDD, Manipur, India will also address it.

Chairman IFC, Atiqur R.K. Eusufzai will deliver the welcome speech.

Engr. ANM Akhtar Hossain, former secretary, Ministry of Energy, President Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh and Prof. Asif Nazrul, Deptment of Law, Dhaka University will present two separate papers.

Former water resources ministers-- Major (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, Abdur Razzak MP and Anisul Islam Mahmud,MP of JP, Minister for Industries Dilip Barua, former ambassador Mohammad Zamir, Rashed Khan Menon MP of Workers Party, Mujahidul Islam Selim of CPB, Khalequzzaman of BSD are expected to address the second session.

Sadeq Khan of weekly Holiday, Alamgir Mohiuddin, Editor, Naya Diganta, Reazuddin Ahmed, Editor, The News Today, Shaukat Mahmud, President and Kamaluddin Sabuj, General Secretary, National Press Club, Awlad Hossain, Senior Vice Chairman, IFC and Syed Irfanul Bari, Secretary, IFC, Bangladesh will put their comments in the second session.

IFC Secretary General, Sayed Tipu Sultan will propose the vote of thanks.

The conference will be followed by formation of a human chain in front of the Press Club protesting the move to construct Tipaimukh Dam in the Monipur state of India.
